English Language Instructor

About This Position

The Language Department at the Institute provides free English language classes, Citizenship classes, and Community Orientation Workshops to students from pre-literacy to advanced. The English Language Instructor’s role includes instruction and curriculum development for English classes, student data entry, and an active role in overall department programming.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach student-centered English Core classes in-person and online (NRS EFL 2 – 5) and hyflex Citizenship supplementary class
  • Develop and update class curriculum adhering to ACES/TIF and CCRS standards.
  • Administer CASAS tests on a 6-week cycle or as directed by the program manager. Calculate test results, score levels, and complete all student attendance and case notes in required databases.
  • Actively coordinate with other instructors to ensure program consistency and student success.
  • Participate in regular professional development and program, department, and all-staff meetings.
  • Contribute to report writing and record progress notes on students and program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to the International Institute of Minnesota mission and vision
  • A. or M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language, Education, or Linguistics
  • A history of related teaching experience
  • Skilled and comfortable using Zoom both as a participant and facilitator
  • Organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Adult Basic Education in Minnesota including testing and reporting practices
  • Proven oral and written communication skills, including negotiation and problem solving.
  • Self-starter/ability to work independently.

Additional Requirements

  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity.
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying.

The Institute assists low income New Americans in their transition to a new homeland by providing comprehensive services for successful integration. The Institute serves more than 4,000 New Americans annually with new arrival social services to employment placement and advancement through to U.S. Citizenship attainment. Programs are divided into three primary areas: Refugee Services, Education and Employment Training Services, and Immigration Services. The Institute also provides advocacy for policy reforms and supports systems change that improve opportunities for New Americans to move their lives forward.
