Employment Coach

Refugees arrive in the U.S. eager to support themselves and their family. The Institute’s Refugee Employment Services helps newly-arrived refugees attain economic self-sufficiency by working with eligible clients to find quality job opportunities within the local community. Clients will typically be New Americans seeking their first job in the United States.

Candidate Profile:

  • Patient, flexible, resourceful and has good communication skills
  • Experience working with people with limited English language skills preferred
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural environments
  • At least two years of paid work experience
  • Experience with computers and Microsoft products
  • Second language ability, particularly Somali, Karen, French, or Kiswahili preferred
  • Candidate should be able to pass a background check

Primary Duties: 

  • Assist clients in creating resumes, completing mock interviews and applying for jobs online and on paper
  • Assist employment counselor with researching/contacting employers in the Twin Cities area
  • Teach clients bus routes from home to Institute or from home to work
  • Follow up with clients and employers to obtain necessary employment documents for reporting
  • Office support: file maintenance, data entry, developing workshop materials and keeping accurate case notes

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum of 4 hours/week 
  • Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Tuesdays and Thursdays preferred)
