Senior Accountant

About This Position

The Senior Accountant works collaboratively with internal and external partners to support the mission of the organization and the overall functioning of the finance department. This person will become an expert in many of the services we offer so that they can support financial reporting and staff in the programs within the organization. This position will work cross-functionally to innovatively strengthen existing processes so that finances are timely, accurate, and beneficial to the short-term and long-term health of the organization.

REPORTS TO: Executive Director and CFO/Controller

Salary range: $86,000-$90,000

FLSA Status: Full time, exempt

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyze actual versus budgeted grant expenditures; partner with the Executive Director, Department Directors, and Program Managers to identify budget or grant variances, trends, risks, and opportunities, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly and quarterly grant invoices in accordance with funder requirements; record all related transactions in the accounting system.
  • Coordinate with program directors and managers and submit grant invoices requests and supporting documentation; track receivables and follow up on outstanding balances.
  • Assist in developing grant budgets, cost allocations, and funding proposals; support financial sections of applications and reporting. Assist with program audits and site visits from grantors.
  • Review and approve weekly vendor payments and staff reimbursements; and manage staff credit card systems.
  • Prepare and review monthly account reconciliations.
  • Review biweekly payroll for accuracy and completeness (earnings, deductions, allocations to programs/grants); submit to payroll provider on schedule. Prepare and upload general ledger posting.
  • Reconcile and analyze employee benefits monthly.
  • Assist with the annual organizational budget process as needed.
  • Strengthen and maintain internal controls and documentation; ensure adherence to GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, including revenue recognition and donor/grant restrictions.
  • Manage cash receipts weekly; and make remote check deposits daily; ensure timely posting and proper coding.
  • Supervise and mentor the Accounting Associate; review work, set priorities, and support professional development.
  • Provide cross-functional financial support to the CFO/Controller and program teams as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO/Controller or Executive Director.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or in relevant field
  • Minimum of two to three years of finance/accounting experience in the nonprofit sector (including accounting for grants)
  • Solid and demonstrated knowledge of GAAP
  • Computer savvy and experience using various accounting software applications, including proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks Online
  • Leadership skills and excellent verbal and written communication
  • Management skills including previous management experience preferred
  • Solid problem solving and analytical skills
  • Has a Driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation
