Basic Needs Fund
Support for Times of Emergency
The Basic Needs Fund provides temporary emergency financial support for Institute clients facing an unplanned emergency that threatens their housing or employment security.
Although the fund originated during the COVID-19 pandemic when newly arrived adult family members were not eligible for unemployment benefits, the fund has changed to support clients and students with a variety of emergency needs.
This year, the Institute will utilize the fund to support clients who were detained by ICE or have a family member who was detained. Due to legal fees, missed work, or the travel costs to return to Minnesota after being detained out of state, clients are unable to pay their full rent payment or utility costs on time. Nearly all grants are made in the form of rent support to help families with their greatest single monthly expense, which provides them with agency to pay for legal fees or prioritize other expenses.
Thank you for helping in any way you can.
