Preparing Your Family for Immigration Emergencies
It is crucial during these difficult and uncertain times for immigrants and refugees to have a plan in place for you and your family.
Being prepared is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones.

These four steps will help you get started.

Collect, update, and make copies of all of you and your children’s important documents, including:

  • State ID or driver’s license
  • Birth certificates
  • Passports
  • Immigration documentation (including your “alien registration number”
  • Marriage
  • Medical
  • Financial
  • School records

Keep copies of your state ID/driver’s license and immigration documentation on you at all times.

It is also important to memorize a phone number you can call in case of detainment or an emergency.

It is recommended to fill out this privacy form now in case you are detained:

Form

  • Choose a trusted family member, friend, or guardian who can take care of your children if you are arrested or detained.
  • Create a Delegation of Parental Authority (DOPA), which gives permission for someone else to make decisions about your child’s care, custody, and property.
    • DOPAs last for one year
    • You do not need to file a DOPA in court
