Statement on Supreme Court Upholding Birthright Citizenship
International Institute of Minnesota applauds Supreme Court decision upholding birthright citizenship
June 30, 2026 ─ The International Institute of Minnesota commends today’s Supreme Court decision in Trump v. Barbara affirming the constitutional principle of birthright citizenship in the United States. For more than 150 years, the Fourteenth Amendment has guaranteed that children born in the U.S. are recognized as citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. Today’s decision provides reassurance and stability for immigrant families, communities, and future generations.
In January 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order attempting to deny birthright citizenship to children born in the U.S. to parents who are not citizens or lawful permanent residents. The Supreme Court’s decision today struck down that executive order.
For the last year and a half, the executive order has caused anxiety, confusion, and uncertainty to many families while this issue was under review.
Today’s Supreme Court ruling reinforces that every child born in the United States deserves equal recognition under the law and that the president cannot use his power to take away constitutionally guaranteed rights.
“While today’s decision is significant, many immigrant and refugee families continue to face challenges in accessing safety, opportunity, and belonging. We remain committed to our mission in supporting immigrants and refugees, advocating for welcoming communities, and ensuring that all New Americans and their families thrive in our state,” said Jane Graupman, Executive Director of the International Institute of Minnesota.
We thank all of those who have stood with immigrant and refugee families throughout this process and continue to stand with our mission.
