Dela reads at the Journeys Reading and Awards Ceremony

Shortly after Dela Dogbey arrived in America from Togo, she was inspired by the diverse ages of American students and began taking classes herself.  Since her arrival in 2000, Dela has studied ESL and attended classes at the Institute where she has graduated from the NAR and College Readiness programs. Dela is currently employed as a nursing assistant and wants to continue her studies in healthcare.

It was through College Readiness that her writing was selected and published in the Minnesota Literacy Council’s annual Adult Basic Education writing publication, “Journeys: An Anthology of Student Writing.” In addition to being published in “Journeys,” Dela was one of 25 authors selected to be part of “Routes,” a publication to celebrate the 25th publication of “Journeys.” Through “Routes,” Dela was provided a writing mentor who worked with her for about a month to create and revise a longer piece of writing. As a published writer, Dela shared her piece “A Great Lesson” with the crowd at the Journeys Reading and Award Ceremony on May 22.

In addition to her studies, Dela participated in Green Card Voices, an organization making a library of oral histories by recording the stories of immigrants who have come to America.  Learn more about Dela’s story here.
