Ukraine Refugee Announcement
March 24, 2022 | Today, President Biden announced the U.S. will welcome 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recent estimate indicates 3,675,000 refugees have fled Ukraine since February 24.
“The International Institute of Minnesota is prepared to support Ukrainians and all those fleeing persecution and violence,” said Jane Graupman, Executive Director. The International Institute of Minnesota has resettled more than 25,000 refugees to Minnesota since 1974.
Currently, there is no further information from the White House indicating what immigration option the U.S. will use to welcome Ukrainians or how family members in Minnesota can sponsor their loved ones. Past practice indicates the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), Temporary Protected Status (TPS-parolee), or family-based visas are possible channels for the Administration to use.
The U.S. has a remarkable history of welcoming refugees seeking safety and protection. More than 90 percent of refugees resettled by the Institute are reuniting with family in Minnesota. As the state’s most comprehensive organization dedicated to serving refugees and immigrants, the Institute offers programs and services to nearly 3,000 New Americans from over 100 countries each year.
