Meet Our Board Members: Mary Hedayati

January 7, 2024 | Throughout our 105-year history, the International Institute of Minnesota has offered innovative programs and services to meet the changing needs of New Americans. We are grateful to our Board of Directors who generously donates their time and expertise contributing to the Institute’s work and mission. Today, meet Mary Hedayati, one of our five newest board members.

1) How did you first connect with the International Institute of Minnesota?

I hold a Ph.D. in Food Science from Iran, where I worked full-time at Tehran University of Medical Sciences for 12 years and taught at the Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch for four years. In September 2022, my husband and I migrated to the United States, beginning a challenging journey to find employment in my field.

When I first arrived in the U.S., despite my education, experience, and background, I struggled to find a job in my field. It was an incredibly challenging time, filled with uncertainty and moments of feeling lost. After nearly a year of searching, I connected with the International Institute of Minnesota, where I found invaluable guidance through their Professional Leadership Training. This experience helped me rediscover my strengths and navigate the U.S. job market.

2) How has your connection to the International Institute of Minnesota personally impacted you?

During those dark days, the Institute was like a warm, wise and supportive hand, offering knowledge, guidance and encouragement without expecting anything in return. Their help gave me the strength and confidence I needed to keep going. (Institute board member) Kevin Barton’s mentorship was pivotal in this journey, providing me with the direction and support I needed to succeed. By leveraging industry networks and engaging in professional conversations, I secured a position as a Research and Development Scientist at General Mills. I am deeply grateful to the Institute for their unwavering support, which restored my confidence during this transitional period.

By contributing my time and energy, I hope to empower more immigrants and refugees as they navigate their own paths to success.

3) Why is volunteering as an Institute board member important to you?

Reflecting on my own journey, I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to join the board of the International Institute of Minnesota. The support I received from this incredible organization was life-changing. Now that I’ve found a good job and established myself, I’m eager to help others who may be facing similar challenges. By contributing my time and energy, I hope to empower more immigrants and refugees as they navigate their own paths to success.

4) What kind of expertise do you hope to offer to the Institute?

By fostering partnerships with companies like General Mills, I aim to create more opportunities and provide support to other immigrants and refugees. It’s a privilege to be in a position to give back and to help open doors for those who are just beginning their journey. Together, we can continue advancing the Institute’s mission of supporting New Americans in Minnesota, helping them realize their full potential.
