Star Tribune | Students experiences have varied: They have missed their routines, had to leave their teams and tried to use sports as healthy distractions during the immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota. The Star Tribune spoke with Jane Graupman, the Institute’s Executive Director.
The Institute had the honor of hosting Saint Paul Mayor Kaohly Her as she was sworn into office during a private inauguration on January 2. Hundreds of her supporters, family, and local city leaders attended this historical event, making Her the first Hmong person, woman and refugee as mayor of Saint Paul.
There are certain rights guaranteed to all people in the United States, regardless of immigration status. It is important to understand these rights, especially if you are an immigrant, parolee, asylum seeker, survivor of human trafficking or other non-citizen.

The International Institute of Minnesota condemns the harmful rhetoric that is being used by those in power to dehumanize, vilify, and demean immigrants and refugees. We also oppose the anti-immigration policy changes and immigration enforcement operations that have accompanied the persistent verbal attacks on New Americans by the president’s administration.
We stand with the Somali community, and all immigrants and refugees in Minnesota and across our country, and we are asking you to do the same.
