Volunteer Tutors New Americans
April 1, 2025 | Volunteers at the International Institute of Minnesota make our many programs and classes possible. Learn more in this question and answer series about what inspires and motivates Jolene, a retired nurse and former nursing instructor at the Institute
1) You could share your valuable time and skills with many deserving non-profits. Why do you choose to donate your time to the International Institute of Minnesota?
Because I believe strongly in the mission and work of the Institute. The classes and services it offers refugees and New Americans helps people get firmly situated in this new place. And the types of work training that is offered helps new arrivals to contribute productively to Minnesota. It also offers me a way to use my skills and training to keep contributing to our community.
2) What kind of volunteering do you do with the Institute?
3) Why is this work important to you? What keeps you coming back as a volunteer?
4) What kind of impact do you hope your volunteer work has?
I hope that it helps the students feel empowered to reach their goals and fulfill their dreams of careers in health care. I hope it makes them feel respected and appreciated as human beings.
Thank you to Jolene for sharing her story and to all our volunteers for the work that helps New Americans become self-sufficient and reach their dreams.
