Conversation Hour Volunteer

Position Description
Conversation Hour volunteers facilitate conversations with students through listening closely and asking follow up questions. Volunteers can choose to either use Institute-developed materials or facilitate organic conversation.

- Welcoming students and volunteers into the session.
- Organizing students into small groups (if student numbers require).
- Leading a small group in conversation during the hour.
- Noting student attendance and sharing information with Institute staff.
- Communicating with Institute staff when needed.
- 18+ years old
- Good communication skills and comfortable with small talk, leading conversation, and listening to facilitate active conversation in others
- Experience teaching or tutoring adult English language learners
- Confident working independently and running a class
- Enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to listen, talk, and learn with New Americans
- Minimum of 1 hour a week and a 3 month minimum.
- 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday
Volunteers will be provided foundational training through Literacy MN, which consists of
- Overview of Minnesota Adult Education and ABE Accountability
- Understanding Adult Learners
- Instructional Best Practices: Working with Learners
- Instructional Best Practices: Working with Materials
- Plus 2 training topics of their choice
Trainings are offered as live webinars, self-paced modules, or recordings.
