What is changing with Medical Assistance?
On October 1, 2026, some noncitizen adults will lose federally funded Medical Assistance based on their immigration status.
Who will lose Medical Assistance?
On October 1, 2026, any refugee age 21 or older who does not have a green card will lose Medical Assistance on October 1, 2026.
Other groups who will lose assistance:
- Asylees
- Afghan and Ukrainian humanitarian parolees
- Trafficking victims
- Battered noncitizens
- Qualified noncitizen veterans
How will I know if I am going to lose Medical Assistance?
If you are one of the groups listed above and receive a notice in the mail sometime between now and September letting you know your case is being reviewed because you will be losing your Medical Assistance.

What should I do if I receive a notice and am going to lose Medical Assistance?

Even if you lose Medical Assistance, you may be eligible for MinnesotaCare. A MNsure navigator will help you decide what type of insurance is best for you.
Who will NOT lose Medical Assistance on October 1, 2026?
Noncitizen adults, age 21 or older who are not pregnant AND are:
- Lawful permanent residents (LPRs or “green card holders”) who satisfy a five-year waiting period or meet an exception
- Cuban or Haitian entrants
- Compact of Free Association (COFA) migrants – people who are citizens of Micronesia, Palau and the Marshall Islands.
Noncitizens who are:
- Children under age 21 who are lawfully present
- People who are pregnant regardless of their immigration status
