Case Manager

About This Position

The Case Manager is an essential member of the Refugee Services team who provides direct case management to newly arrived families in accordance with program requirements.  This includes planning, preparing, and coordinating with teammates for a family’s arrival; greeting new arrivals at the airport; providing transportation to and from appointments such as the Social Security office, health clinics, county offices, and schools; teaching adults how to utilize public transportation; connecting adults to employment services; educating families on budgeting strategies; and promoting independence and self-sufficiency throughout the case management period.  The Case Manager also orients clients to their new community and supports them in navigating and accessing available community resources.

Salary range: $50,000-$52,000

FLSA Status: 1.0 FTE

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read and understand program requirements as outlined in federal contracts
  • Coordinate with teammates to ensure access to safe, sanitary, and affordable housing that is furnished with basic needs items, prior to arrival
  • Meet new families at the airport and transport them to their new home
  • Conduct home safety visits and cultural orientations to life in the United States
  • Assist with applications for public benefits such as food support, cash assistance, health insurance, SSI, WIC, and childcare assistance
  • Arrange appointments for services including medical visits, Social Security, school enrollment, and English class registration
  • Show adults how to navigate public transportation and ensure independence in utilizing transportation systems in the Metro Area
  • Support families with cultural navigation and developing problem-solving strategies
  • Interpret or arrange for interpreters for clients and/or family members as necessary
  • Complete all required home visits, case notes, and program paperwork as required
  • Make appropriate referrals to other services that will help advance clients’ goals
  • Attend all team and staff meetings as required by supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience and Qualifications

  • Commitment to the human rights and general welfare of asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced, multicultural office environment
  • Demonstrated experience taking initiative with projects and tasks, and seeing things through to completion, with minimal supervisor oversight
  • Proactive problem-solver with ability to independently address issues as they arise
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative space and across multiple teams, with a willingness to support teammates in accordance with our “one team” philosophy
  • Commitment to the use of strength-based client approaches, and to supporting families in their journeys to becoming confident, independent, and self-sufficient
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including required administrative tasks such as comprehensive case noting and case file documentation
  • Ability to speak Arabic, Dari, French, Pashto, or Swahili, preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or work experience in a relevant field preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and access to own transportation required (must be willing to transport clients in personal vehicle)
  • Ability to work some late nights and weekends
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
