Medical Career Advancement Navigator
About This Position
The Medical Career Advancement (MCA) Navigator works within MCA as part of the Medical Careers Pathway at the International Institute of Minnesota. MCA offers academic and career guidance, wrap-around support, and tuition assistance to foreign-born individuals attending college nursing and other medical career training programs. The program also supports internationally trained healthcare professionals as they recertify in Minnesota. The MCA Navigator manages a caseload of active clients and a five-year history of cases. The MCA Navigator awards partial tuition assistance and facilitates disbursement to colleges and universities. The MCA Navigator approves reimbursement for eligible relicensing expenses. The MCA Navigator provides academic advising, career counseling, and navigation of higher education. The MCA Navigator provides academic writing tutoring, arranges nursing and NCLEX tutoring, and provides employment services. The Navigator is responsible for client management, outcome tracking, and data entry. The Navigator shares responsibility for recruitment, outreach and relationship-building with education and employment partners, volunteer recruitment, and report writing.

Salary range: $52,000-$56,000
FLSA Status: 1.0 FTE

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide educational case management for New Americans who are training or advancing their medical careers, and provide relicensing support to internationally trained professional clients
- Recruit clients and respond to program inquiries
- Counsel Institute clients and students about healthcare career pathways, provide guidance about college and program selection, assist with financial planning, and provide overall support for student success
- Connect individuals to Nursing Assistant Training, College Readiness Academy, TEAS Prep, Professional Leadership Training, Entrepreneurship, and other Institute classes and services
- Review client applications, interview prospective clients, and award tuition assistance, reimbursements, and support services according to funding requirements
- Develop individual employment plans and track client data and progress on databases and spreadsheets, keeping client data current (Excel, D365, Workforce One)
- Give MCA presentations
- Identify gaps in student knowledge and develop supportive measures
- Represent the MCA program at nursing program advisory committee meetings
- Advocate for clients at colleges, universities, and places of employment
- Provide writing tutoring (APA format) and teach clients to recognize repeated errors
- Recruit volunteer tutors and connect clients with tutors
- Provide clients with employment support through resume and cover letter support, practice interviewing, and employer referrals
- Track project outcomes and assist with quarterly and annual funding reports
- Partner with community college nursing programs and other community and employment partners to enhance program and client success
- Attend Institute All Staff meetings, All Workforce and Navigator meetings, and MCA meetings
- This person may have recurring access to vulnerable populations
Experience and Qualifications
- Commitment to the International Institute of Minnesota mission and vision
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- Proven oral and written communication skills, including negotiation and problem solving
- Experience working with New Americans and non-native speakers of English
- Knowledge of local community resources
- Excellent organizational skills and an ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Self-motivated person who can work independently and collaborate
- Experience or familiarity with one or more of the following:
- College medical career training programs such as nursing
- Career counseling / academic advising
- Relicensing process for internationally trained professionals

The Institute serves more than 4,000 New Americans annually with new arrival social services to employment placement and advancement through to U.S. Citizenship attainment. Programs are divided into three primary areas: Refugee Services, Education and Employment Training Services, and Immigration Services.
