With great sadness, we share news of the passing of our former colleague Robert Hoyle. Bob, who served as Executive Director of the Institute from 1970 to 2005, died on October 23, 2021. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues.

In 1970 when Bob began his tenure at the Institute, one of his first tasks was to find the Institute a new home. Bob located our current building at 1694 Como Avenue, and had a vision for how it could meet the Institute’s needs at that moment and in the decades to come.

Under Bob’s leadership, the Institute launched the refugee resettlement program, the Nursing Assistant Training program, the Medical Career Advancement program and “English for Work” classes. The Institute welcomed more than 18,000 refugees over the course of his thirty-five years as Executive Director.

Bob was tireless in his efforts to provide cultural connections and a strong beginning for New Americans in our country. He was also a strong advocate for staff, wanting the very best for everyone in their personal and professional endeavors. His love for community and friends and family was undeniable.

In 2005 when Bob announced his retirement from the Institute, he said this of his work: “My job, simply put, has been to watch over a precious jewel and keep polishing it so it shines a bit brighter. I love this special place and always will.”
