Class Description
The Citizenship Class prepares English learners to successfully complete the naturalization process. This preparation includes developing English language skills and civics content knowledge and learning about the Form N-400 and the naturalization interview. ESL and naturalization instruction are woven throughout the lessons and activities in the course. Students will build knowledge and skills throughout scaffolded instructional activities, and they can expect to be speaking, reading, and writing in English in every class. Classes are taught in person and online.
Position Description
The Citizenship Instructor at the International Institute of Minnesota plays a key role in empowering New Americans by providing comprehensive instruction to prepare students for the U.S. naturalization process. This position involves teaching both online and in-person classes, with a focus on developing English language proficiency and civics knowledge required for successful completion of the naturalization interview and Form N-400. The instructor is responsible for creating and delivering curriculum tailored to mixed-level learners, utilizing scaffolded instructional activities that integrate ESL and citizenship content.

Primary Responsibilities:
Citizenship Class Instructor:
- Teach and develop Citizenship class for students seeking citizenship.
- Evaluate student performance:
- Provide ongoing normative assessment in class.
- Record student progress and performance in Institute database, SID and the USCIS database.
- Administrative responsibilities related to instruction and program overall.
- Gather students’ personal information as needed by funders.
- Maintain student records for SID and USCIS.
- Participate in enhancing and expanding Citizenship classes.
- Participate in Institute and teaching staff meetings.
- Assist in preparation of reports for funders, as needed.
- Share other Education team responsibilities as they arise.
Experience and Qualifications
- Master’s degree in TESOL or related field (required for partnership and credit transfer).
- At least 2 years of experience teaching ABE learners as a primary teacher from a wide variety of backgrounds plus one year of experience teaching virtual instruction.
- Experience developing curriculum for mixed-level learners.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, Zoom, and other online ABE-approved platforms.
- Ability to keep detailed notes about students’ goals, progress, and recommendations in SID and other client management software.
- Understanding of what it takes for a student to become college ready.
- Ability to work closely in a team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to teach online and face-to-face in an engaging, interactive manner.
- TABE test certification and already trained as a TABE proctor or will pursue proctor training upon starting the position.
- Flexibility in teaching.

- Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity.
- Physical ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged standing, sitting, and other activities necessary to perform job duties.
