Citizenship Class Teacher

Position Description

Make a difference in your community by volunteering to teach a weekly, in-person citizenship class for immigrants living in Minnesota. By guiding English language learners through preparation for the citizenship test, you’ll play a vital role in their journey to become U.S. citizens − opening doors to new rights, opportunities and the ability to fully participate in our democracy.

Volunteers will use the Institute’s citizenship test curriculum. All information is provided.

The Citizenship Class prepares English learners for the U.S. citizenship test, including:

  • Understanding the process of becoming a citizen
  • Learning United States history and government
  • Interview preparation and practice

This class will be scheduled for either every Monday or every Wednesday (depending on your availability) from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. We ask volunteers to commit to at least 3 months of volunteering.

More Information

As the volunteer Citizenship Class teacher, you will:

  • Teach the class independently using the Institute-developed curriculum
  • Teach between 2-15 students each session, depending on student needs
  • Track student attendance
  • Communicate regularly with Institute staff regarding your needs and class progress

  • 18+ years old
  • Experience teaching or tutoring adult English language learners; students will typically be at English B or C level – have some knowledge of English, but still learning.
  • Good communication skills, including ability to communicate with English learners of varying levels
  • Confident working independently and teaching a class using Institute materials
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility and a desire to listen, talk and learn with New Americans
  • Comfortable connecting with Institute staff with questions or concerns
Knowledge of U.S. history/government is not required. Volunteers will be using the Institute’s citizenship test curriculum. All information is provided.

  • 1-2 hours per week
  • 3 month minimum
