English Students Learn Hand-Washing Technique from Nursing Assistant Students

English students learn proper hand-washing technique to prevent spread of coronavirus

COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, is of concern to most of us — including the English language students in the Institute’s English for Work program. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests hand-washing as an important preventative measure to stop the spread of the disease. Luckily for the Institute, we have about 36 infection-control experts on site: the students in our Nursing Assistant Training Program.

Last week, these students generously took a break from preparing for the Minnesota State Certification Exam and visited our English classes to teach infection-control level hand-washing. Students with less English received instruction in their first language, and every English student mimed hand-washing before demonstrating the correct procedure under the supervision of the nursing assistant students.

Hand-Washing Steps

  • Turn on water at sink.
  • Wet hands and wrists thoroughly.
  • Apply soap to hands.
  • Lather all surfaces of wrists, hands, and fingers producing friction, for at least 20 seconds, keeping hands lower than elbows, and fingertips down.
  • Clean fingernails by rubbing fingertips against palms of the opposite hand.
  • Rinse all surfaces of wrists, hands, and fingers, keeping hands lower than the elbows, and the fingertips down.
  • Use clean, dry paper towel/towels to dry all surfaces of fingers, hands, and wrists starting at fingertips, then dispose of paper towel/towels into waste container.
  • Use clean dry paper towel/towels to turn off faucet, then dispose of paper towel/towels into waste container or use knee/foot control to turn off faucet.
