College Readiness Student Support
Position Description
Our free College Readiness Academy prepares New Americans for college or a higher education program in the United States. We also provide one-to-one support to help students understand how the American college system works and how to apply for financial aid. In this class, students learn:
- Reading skills such as annotation, critical thinking and vocabulary-building
- Writing skills such as paragraph-writing and essay-writing
- Study skills such as scanning, note-taking and test-taking
- Computer skills such as word processing, navigating e-learning platforms (Google Classroom) and research
Our College Readiness Academy students benefit from writing, test prep, conversation and digital literacy support. As a Student Support Volunteer, you will help students in these areas, as well as encourage and empower them to keep moving forward to reach their goals and utilize teacher support and services.

More Information
We are looking for someone who is willing to work one-on-one with students on basic reading, writing and technology skills while encouraging growth. We will provide training and support for tutors.
- Volunteers are asked to schedule a minimum of two hours per week (ideally over two, 1-hour sessions) during the semester.
- Volunteers are required to commit to at least a semester. Fall Semester (September-December), Spring (January- May), Summer (June-August).
- For our hybrid class, we ask volunteers to commit to at least one hour in person and one hour virtually.
- For our all-virtual class, we ask volunteers to commit to two hours virtually.
Volunteers will be provided with four hours of training through Literacy Minnesota before working with students. Additional training can be done through your time commitment. A College Readiness Academy volunteer coordinator will also provide support and guidance.
Volunteering as a tutor can help you find a meaningful way to provide service to another person using the skills and knowledge you have gained over the years.
