VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Mock Interviewer

Two

Position Description

As a Volunteer Mock Interviewer, you’ll meet virtually or in-person with students in our Professional Leadership Class who are developing leadership and management skills to advance their careers in a wide variety of areas. This class is designed for New Americans with U.S. work experience across industries.
Each semester, these Mock Interview events give students an opportunity to practice their interview skills with volunteers. We try to connect students and volunteers from similar fields together. We’re looking for professionals across all industries who have experience with hiring and/or interviewing staff. We’ll provide a list of questions to ask your assigned interviewee and provide a feedback form at the end to give any helpful tips to the interviewee.

Estimated time commitment:

We ask that you interview 2 students for 20 minutes each, with time in between for feedback and transition.  The total mock interview time will be 1 ½ hours.

February 20, 6:00 – 7:30pm, Online

February 27, 10:00 – 11:30am, In-Person

Worksite:
Our in-person Mock Interview event will take place at the International Institute of Minnesota, 1694 Como Ave Saint Paul MN 55108.

More Information

  • We ask that the volunteer have experience in interviewing for professional experiences.  We try to fit your experience with the student’s, but this is not always possible.  Again, the focus is on the interviewing skills and not the specific industry.   Be able to give constructive feedback on interviewing skills.
  • We also ask that the volunteer has some cultural competency in being able to listen and understand accented speech and provide a safe space for students to practice and hone their English speaking skills.

  • Mock interviews can be a one-time commitment for 1.5 hours, either in person or virtually.
  • Mock interviews are offered each semester for our Professional Leadership students. If you enjoy this volunteer opportunity (and we’re certain you will!), there will be more opportunities in the future.

We have developed a list of “common interview questions” that the students use to practice their interviewing skills in class. One week before Mock Interviews, we will send a copy of this list of common interview questions and a copy of the evaluation to the interviewers so they can prepare. We will provide an online orientation for new volunteers.
